Coltan is short for Columbite-Tantalite, which is a black metallic ore containing both niobium and tantalum. When coltan is refined it becomes metallic tantalum. Tantalum is used for capacitors that store electricity. Coltan is found in Brazil, Canada, China, Ethiopia, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It can be found in electronics, jet engines, weapons, and other items we use. It is also a source of conflict, and coltan is sometimes referred to as "Blood Coltan". It is also becoming rare, and is in high global demand.
